Sexual harassment in australia for women
Amid growing debate over what many have described as a toxic culture for women working in Parliament House, questions are being raised about how other Australian workplaces are handling reports of sexual harassment and assault. Three other women have made allegations about a man who is alleged to have raped former staffer Brittany Higgins at Parliament House in March , with the matter prompting a surge in women reporting sexual assaults to police in Canberra and others alleging they've experienced harassment in political circles. Ms Higgins has called for major changes to the way complaints about alleged misconduct at Parliament House are handled, saying she felt like she had to choose between making a formal complaint and keeping her job. Though it is only the latest in a growing list of stories that point to cultural problems in politics , it is not a quandary confined to Canberra. A national survey by the Australian Human Rights Commission in found 33 per cent of respondents reported experiencing workplace sexual harassment. Disturbingly, however, the majority did not formally report their experience or seek support or advice, "with many victims believing a formal complaint would be viewed as an overreaction or that it was easier to stay quiet".

Sexual Harassment | Australian Human Rights Commission
Sexual harassment is any unwanted or unwelcome sexual behaviour where a reasonable person would have anticipated the possibility that the person harassed would feel offended, humiliated or intimidated. It has nothing to do with mutual attraction or consensual behaviour. Sexual harassment is unlawful under the Sex Discrimination Act in different areas of public life, including employment, service delivery, accommodation and education. Some types of sexual harassment may also be criminal offences. Example: A young woman was employed at a medical centre. A person who sexually harasses someone else is primarily responsible for their behaviour. However, in many cases, employers can also be held responsible for sexual harassment by their employees.

Sexual harassment affects workplaces across Australia. So what can we do better?
In a closed social media group made up of more than 1, current and former female Australian Labor party staffers, women have detailed their experiences of working with some of the men in the party, furiously declaring they will no longer be silent. Guardian Australia has seen some of the posts, which detail some of the harassment, without naming anyone. They range from men name-calling and abusing women to inappropriate comments, pressuring women for sex, and plying women with alcohol to the point that consent could not be ascertained. Former Labor staffer, Anna Jabour, who wrote an op-ed last week telling her own story of harassment, abuse and a toxic culture during the Gillard-Rudd years, told Guardian Australia she was not surprised by the torrent of women now coming forward.
It was in front of everyone. I told him off. I was of the opinion that once you reach a certain age the risk is lower but it still happens.
